Night Hour

as part of 'Hell Remains' cur. by Arepo

Haus N, Athens

15 Feb - 6 Apr 2024

The works Sunset Gatherer (2023), Harvester I (2022) and Wingslocks (2024) come together in an installation under the title ‘Night Hour’ where they construct a mesh of fluid space-time. Shadow bodies perceived in the frontal plane and perpetual walkers carry with them relics of a nature they seek or may have lost. Thorny flowers - which the artist collects and transforms from organic to inorganic matter - are attuned to their bodies as imprints or carried along with companion animals in their wanderings.
These weightless presences, whose volume is greatly reduced under the red hot sun - present in their constant dislocation, are perhaps manifestations of the same person in different conditions of their wanderings. Sunset Gatherer could be perceived for the context of the exhibition as a personification of Dido of Carthega, who thwarted by her love for Aeneas, suicides and wanders as a shadow in hell. She meets him there again in the Night when he descends to Hades to speak with his dead father. Relics or signs of architecture are both her personal shelters and the portals of her movement between worlds. Following Dido in her various guises, demons, angels, souls, or other disembodied manifestations of herself, unlock her arrival or departure in landscapes of her psyche or in territories of self-fulfilment.
