Whisperer VI
at 'Touching Faultlines' cur. by Angeliki Tzortzakakis & Panos Gianikopoulos
Ancient Roman Theatre of Gortys, Crete
23 — 25 Aug 2024
The work Whisperer VI is a continuation of the series Whisperers by Lito Kattou. The series initially discusses the cooperatives between craftswomen and the colonial utilization and development of the basket weaving craft in the South Eastern Mediterranean, yet also encounters an attempt to imagine new forms of existence constantly adapting and transforming within the surrounding environmental forces. Whisperer VI is installed outdoors and positioned in an everlasting perpetual dialogue with the weather and the physical phenomena surrounding her. She seems to traverse lands, boundaries and terrains with her chariots accompanied by animals and flora. Figures of dogs and birds, thistle flowers collected from Mediterranean localities, that are then copper plated by the artist, as a gesture of preservation and transformation of matter, are carried on her body and gear. She seems to be a personification or a simile to mythical figures that are roving, moving constantly - forcefully obliged by geopolitical and environmental contexts of friction and displacement or by a need of re-establishing connections with the world anew.photos: Stathis Mamalakis
