'Letter to an Ailing Father'
DEO Projects, Chios | Volissos School
11 July - 30 August 2026
cur. by Akis Kokkinos
Three wandering creatures - partially women, partially birds - have nested in different rooms of the school. By carrying flowers, baskets and symbolic objects they have engraved on their bodies traces of the places they have passed through. At their stop in Volissos they have collected within their wings handmade weavings from the area, as a gesture of preservation of the local cultural heritage beyond the specific locality and time. By engaging in the practices of basket weaving of the Eastern Mediterranean and the histories embedded within them, the artist composes a series of works where the bodies of the ‘Whisperers’ are introduced as hybrid entities traversing the region. They carry, preserve, rumor and disseminate practices and patterns as they cross landscapes and frontiers that are constantly being reshaped by environmental and geopolitical forces.
The weavings carried in the back side of the works are realised in collaboration with the women's association ''Friends of the Chian Village"
Presented as part of DEO’s collaboration with Pylon Art & Culture
